Writing a thesis # 2: Selecting a consulting committee

Last month, my Fellow blog-contributing, Zac McFarlane, started this series when writing a master's thesis with tip # 1: Choose a topic where you are interested. This is an excellent advice and should be the first step you write your thesis. With this post, I will explore the next step of the process or tips # 2: Choose an advisory committee to support your work work.

Your advisory committee includes a group of faculty members who will lead you through the program and the work of your master. These individuals are crucial for their success as a graduate student at Colorado State University. Without your consent, you can not stop your thesis, complete the program or earn your completion - select your committee considered.

Before you assemble your committee, it is important to understand the policy that governs the consulting system, as sketched in Section E.1.1 of the -graduate Professional Bulletin . I encourage you to read this section exactly, but shortly, you need at least 3 people in your consulting committee for a master's thesis: 1) a consultant from its department, 2) another faculty member of its department and 3) a faculty member of one Exterior department. That should be easy, right?

It's up to you

As a graduate student, it is your responsibility to put together your committee. You have to address the faculty members to secure your agreement for your committee, and your committee must be approved by your head of department. According to the faculty of the faculty in my department and in the bulletin, which reflects in bulletin, I recommend, members based on their interests to choose their experience with these individuals and their knowledge and know-how of their theme.

The process is much like dating. For a potential consultant or a committee member, they can be rejected. You can also make the wrong choice and trace. If you want to find another consultant for any reason, that's fine as long as you communicate your needs.

Do not be shy during the process, just be prepared. Perform a preliminary literature check on your topic and define the problem you appeal to clearly define. Be prepared to offer a brief overview of your disposal proposal to potential committee members, especially your future consultants. You want to show initiative, interest and understanding in the first phase of the development phase of the dissertation. The faculty members are busy, and they do not want to come as someone who stopped his hand during the final process that can take several semesters.

Selecting your advisor

Your consultant is the chairman of your committee and your Chief source for advice if you complete your master's thesis. Some departments require them to be selected by a faculty member that is true to advise them before they are even admitted to a graduate program. At least your department head selects at least a temporary consultant so you can start your program. You can stay with this person, or you may want to find someone as soon as they have solidified their topic.

When looking for a consultant, I should check the curriculum vitae and the CVs of faculty members in their department to find someone with shared interests, both professionally and academic. If the person has worked in their area, he can better determine the practical impact of their research and help them to network after graduation. You also want someone with knowledge and know-how in potential theories and methods to inform your study. If you are lucky, you can even be asked to support this person with its own research, or maybe with the author a paper.

Other factors to take into account include the schedule of the faculty.If the person has a complete course load, research agenda, administrative duties and Advissie list, he or she may have little time for you. You should also assess the personality of the faculty member to see if they can work together two. After the Graduate & Professional Bulletin is "a close, warm and professional relationship ... of the utmost importance. Both student and consultant should work in achieving mutual understanding and respect."

Rounds of the committee

If you selected your consultant, you can consider other members. When looking at your department, use the same criteria as your search for a consultant. This person can even be called Co-Advisor.

If you look outside your department, the best person vary greatly for you. You can know someone personally, which serves in your committee, or you may need an expert in a related area. For example, I am the student of a master in the Department of Journalism & Technical Communication, which studies communication in a natural resource context, so I have an external member of the Warner College of Natural Resources. This person was extremely helpful to show me on studying in their field, which refers to my topic.
