Dissertation Write Retreat Reset

The graduate school for the promotion of vocational development is pleased to be able to offer four write trains for dissertation authors every year. Open for doctoral candidates from all departments located in the dissertation write phase, these retreats offer extensive structured time to write and develop effective write strategies in addition to other dissentors.

During the retreat, the graduated student writer:

• have assumed written time to develop effective rhythms for writing, and generate significant progress for a lengthy letter.
• Participation in a community of writers: Discuss your writing process, share goals and provide support to build structures of accountability.
• Experiment with best practice writing skills for things like drawing, targeting facilities and time management.

  • Summer II - June 28 - July 9th (without quarterly July or weekend obligations)
• We also intensively introduce a summer reading (14 to 18 June). Request due 25th May!
• Please note that in-peaking retreats are shifted indefinitely until we can return to regular activity on campus.

Retreat structure

We cover best writing practices on Monday morning in a three-hour boot camp. Then the rest of the week is structured from 9 to 14 o'clock to work, think about it and experiment with best practices. Lunch, coffee, tea and snacks are available.

The presence of the whole day for the entire week is mandatory, and the participants should not come late or go early.

These write runs are offered without costs by supporting the graduate school for free. Childcare scholarships for up to $ 150 per family are available from the graduate school.

The retreat of the dissertation letter was helpful to set up the time to sit and write with people. The time that had seen in manageable chunks was helpful because it was structured and I felt responsible to achieve something. I loved the exercises to check what I did that day, and what were my smaller, short-term goals.

How do I benefit?

Several participants have described the retreats as "transformative"!

Although it is only a one-week commitment, students fill out an extraordinary writing. Some quote the retreats as a "unique thing to help me, my dissertation completes" and others claim that they "have done more than in four days more than in the last three months"!

Perhaps more important is important that the participants of a community participate in writers and learn strategies to make progress. The writing of a dissertation is hard and often isolated. The withdrawal has helped you strengthen your confidence and motivate you to the destination:

How do I apply?

Acceptance in the program is competitive, and the acceptance is based on the strength of the completed application form.We prioritize applicants who actively write the dissertation chapters, as full-time Umass diploma students and expressing interest in a sustainable writing time participating in a community of authors and with best practice writing capabilities experiment. Participants must undertake to participate in the entire retreat to take into account. Preferably, PhD dissertation authors result. MFAs, master students as well as those in the prospectus / suggestion phase as well as previous participants are considered when space is available.

Applications are researched a few months before each retreat (about October-November for the winter; January-February for the spring break and March-April for summer) researched. This timeframe allows the accepted applicants to plan the logistics of the campus on the campus this week and prepare their research for an intensive writing week.
