Dissertation advice

Lately, a very beloved friend asked me for advice on the dissertation writing, not because I am any paragon of efficiency, but because she knew that I was fighting myself. She wanted to know if I had any words of wisdom to carry out the process with a minimum of pain.

My immediate impulse was to go to the occasion, on the facilities that I am completely unqualified to advise someone when writing without pain. My next impulse should be advised by my friends about Twitter, and I got some wonderful answers. There were some anxious helpful practical tips, but one who really thinks me was from my friend Franky Abbott, suggesting how important it is "that the dissertation is the obsolete process training and not a reflection of her total value."

This is a truth that is completely obvious to me in my post-degree school life, and I thought that this could be something useful that I could offer my friend. Of course, I knew theoretically that what I had written was an exercise as a finished product, this knowledge meant to me little in the greenhouse of the Grade School. Now, a few years after leaving Yale, I see that what I did was learned how to write scholarship. My dissertation is not a great work of geniuses, I know that, but I do not feel apologizing. The world did not need any further dissertation, but I needed the opportunity to learn a letter.

So, so I said to my friend, and what I would tell if I could, if I could: they are more important than any damn dissertation.

The dissertation is a training process, and the finished product is infinitely less important than in their own mental health intact. The years that happen and people who love them and the things they are doing, which is really important. You write something wonderful because you are who you are, but even if you do not do it, no matter, your friends and family will not be interested because they love you and get to know you, brilliant and funny and nice and complicated to be .

They are an adult human man with priorities and interests and wishes that differ from those of their committee, dean, DGS and other degree students. If you receive nagging emails from the degree school about your timeline? Ignore her. If your consultant does not get what you do, ignore him too. The people who ask them how many pages they wrote and how many chapters they are done and where they have published and when they are done? Fuck 'em. They are noise. You do not know you.

Take many walks, get a lot of exercise, take time, take yourself, friends friends, be nice to other people who are in the same boat and help them if they can.

Get to know librarians and archive. Use a quote management system. Consider the scriveer instead of Word. Digitize everything you can. Secure your data. Find out which day periods work for you and then write. Make the 15-minute thing. Respect the indirect work that contributes to your dissertation - talks with friends, seemingly non-contiguous books, long walks.

I do not have to tell you that I work hard because I know you want it. And there are many times in which hard work is, according to that. However, there are other times when you do if you should do is easy to go on yourself, and the real challenge of the process is to find out what is.

The most important thing is, your friends and your family know them and love them, and that has nothing to do with their dissertation.

Family and friends come first in front of a dissertation write project. Too much time for this project is required, is required, but the value for families and friends is important because they will always be there for you.
